Narcisse Alexis St. Laurent - Great Grandfather


Narcisse and Nymphodore


Alexis Narcisse St. Laurent was the son of Octave Joseph St. Laurent and Salome Gagnon.  He was born on June 2, 1851 either in Rimouski or Sainte Anne des Monts, Quebec, Canada (somewhere in the Gaspe region).  Narcisse is my great grandfather.


He was more commonly known as Narcisse Alexis.  Narcisse was one of twelve children.

On October 23,1862, when he was 11 years old, Narcisse's mother Salome died. His father, Octave,  married Esther St. Pierre in 1863 and had three more children.


Marriage

On July 3, 1877, at age 26, Narcisse married Nymphodore (Nelphaldor) Dionne (1845-1926) in Cap Chat, Saint Norbert, Quebec.  

Nymphodore was the daughter of Bruno Dionne and Josephte Gagnon. She was one of sixteen children.

Together Narcisse and Nymphodore had six children:

Joseph St. Laurent (1878-1956)
Anna St. Laurent (1879-1922)
Francois Xavier St. Laurent (St. Lawrence) - My grandfather

Alexis Narcisse St. Laurent (1888 - 1957)
Adelaide (Adella) St. Laurent- (1891-1979)

Ulfranc Wilfred St. Laurent - (born sometime after 1877 and according to heresay died while fighting in WWI.   According to Narcisse's obituary,  he was alive and living in Alberta, Canada in 1915).

The family moved to Winchendon, Mass in 1893.

Residences (Census Reports):

According to the 1861 Census,  Narcisse lived in Gaspe, township of St. Ann at age 10 with his parents and siblings.

According to the 1871 Census, Narcisse lived in Cap Chat at age 20 with his parents.

According to the 1881 Census,  Narcisse lived in Cap Chat at age 30 with his wife Nymphodore and their two children Joseph (age 3) and Anne (age 1).  

According to the 1910 Census, Narcisse lived with his wife and two children Alexis (Age 22) and Adelaide (Age 19) at 61 Glenallan St. in Winchendon, Mass.  Narcisse's occupation was listed as a plasterer in a cotton mill.  Alexis was a spinner at the cotton mill and Adelaide was listed as an operator at a toy shop.


Narcisse died on April 25, 1915 in Winchendon, Mass at age 63.  He is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Winchendon.

His wife, Nephaldor, died in 1926 at the age of 81.  According to the 1920 Census, she had moved in with her daughter Adelaide and her husband Adolphe once Narcisse had passed away.  She is also buried at Calvary Cemetery.

Octave Joseph St Laurent 1818 - 1910 Great Great Grandfather


Octave Joseph St. Laurent was my great great grandfather and paternal grandfather to Francois Xavier St. Laurent (my mother's father and my maternal grandfather).

Octave's birth has been recorded as December 12, 1818 and December 12, 1820 
in Rimouski, Quebec , Canada.  So far, I have not found an official birth record to confirm either date.  Octave's parents were  Ulfranc St. Laurent (1784-1858) and Marguerite Parent (1788-1865) .   He was one of sixteen children.

He married Salome Gagnon (1822-1862) on January 13, 1845 in  L'Isle-Verte, Quebec, Canada at age 26 and together they had ten children.

Salome Gagnon was born in Kamouruska, Quebec on March 1, 1822. Her parents were Joseph Gagnon and Salone Chorest


In the 1861 Census,  the family is recorded as living in Ste. Anne, Gaspe, Quebec.

On October 23, 1862, Octave's first wife Salome dies and he marries Esther St. Pierre on May 10, 1868 and has 3 more children:

Jochiam St. Laurent (1871)

Charles Monfred St. Laurent (1874-1954)

In the 1871 Census of Canada,  Octave and Esther are living in Cap Chatte with nine of their combined children and Octave's occupation is listed as Cultivateur or farmer. 


In the 1881 Census, Octave and Esther are still in Cap Chatte with seven of their combined children.

In the 1901 Census, Octave is 81 years old and living with his wife Esther and daughter Marie in Levis, Quebec, closer to Quebec City (this may have been Esther's birth city).

Octave died at the age of 91 in Rimouski, Quebec on March 24, 1910 and his wife Esther died in 1932.
